Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 9, 2026

Introduction

WineLens ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application for wine bottle recognition and cellar management.

Information We Collect

Personal Information:

We do not collect any personally identifiable information such as your name, email address, or phone number. WineLens does not require an account to use.

Wine Photos and Scans:

When you scan a wine bottle, the label image may be sent to our recognition service to identify the wine. The image is processed only to return identification results and is not used to identify you, train models on your personal data, or shared with third parties for advertising purposes.

Cellar Data:

Your cellar information — including saved bottles, ratings, tasting notes, and collection statistics — is stored locally on your device. This data is not transmitted to our servers unless you opt in to backup features.

AI Sommelier Conversations:

When you chat with the AI sommelier, your messages are sent to our AI provider to generate responses. Conversations are processed in real time and are not linked to your identity. We do not store the content of your chats on our servers.

Usage Data:

We may collect anonymous, aggregated usage data (such as crash reports and feature usage counts) to improve the app. This data cannot be used to identify you personally.

Local Storage:

The app stores the following on your device:

  • Your scanned wines and personal cellar database
  • App settings and preferences
  • Scan history and favorites
  • Custom tasting notes and ratings
  • Wishlist and shopping reminders

How We Use Your Information

We use information to:

  • Identify wines from photos you submit
  • Provide tasting notes, ratings, and food pairings
  • Power conversations with your AI sommelier
  • Maintain your personal cellar and scan history
  • Track market prices and collection value
  • Improve recognition accuracy and app stability
  • Remember your preferences and settings

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your information to third parties for marketing purposes. We may share limited information with trusted service providers (such as our AI recognition and chat partners) strictly to operate WineLens.

We may disclose information if required by law or to protect our rights, property, or safety.

Data Security

We use industry-standard encryption (HTTPS/TLS) when transmitting data between your device and our services. While we take reasonable steps to protect your information, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure.

Data Retention

Your cellar data and preferences remain on your device until you delete the app or reset your settings. Wine recognition images are processed transiently and are not retained on our servers beyond what is needed to deliver results.

Children's Privacy

WineLens is intended for users of legal drinking age in their jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under that age. If you believe a minor has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

Third-Party Services

WineLens uses third-party services for wine recognition, AI sommelier responses, crash reporting, and price data. These providers process data only on our behalf and are bound by strict confidentiality and data protection agreements.

Wine Recognition Technology

Our recognition technology uses computer vision and machine learning models to identify wine labels. Submitted images are used only to return identification results and are not used to build personal profiles.

App Store Compliance

WineLens complies with both Apple's App Store and Google Play Store guidelines and privacy requirements:

  • Clear, transparent privacy practices
  • No advertising tracking by default
  • Local-first cellar storage
  • No data sharing for marketing purposes
  • Cross-platform consistency

You have the right to:

  • Access your data (stored locally on your device)
  • Delete your data (by uninstalling the app)
  • Opt out of optional analytics in app settings
  • Contact us with any privacy concerns
